MORE to know:

MARIA DEL PILAR completed her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at the Conservatory of Antioquia University in Colombia and earned a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from Azusa Pacific University. The latter granted her a full scholarship for Spring 2014 to participate in their opera program singing Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and The Mother in Weir’s Vanishing Bridegroom. In her native Colombia, she performed leading operatic roles in all the major theatres of the country. Her operatic roles include Musetta (La Boheme), Micaela (Carmen), Despina (Cosi fan tutte), La Condesa Carolina (Los Gavilanes), and Luisa Fernanda (Luisa Fernanda). Ms. Pilar's solo appearances in oratorio, sacred, and symphonic literature embrace Händel's Messiah, Haydn's Creation (Gabriel), Vivaldi's Gloria, Mozart's Requiem, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

Ms. Pilar is partnered with composer and pianist Dr. Edward David Zeliff in Opus 2, a duo dedicated to the creation, discovery and performance of original and exotic repertoire from a variety of genres and styles of music. With Dr. Zeliff she premiered A Woman's Love, an original one-woman theatre piece he composed expressly for her on poetry of Emily Dickinson. As a recitalist, she has appeared in all the major cities of Colombia, as well as throughout Southern California. She is an active member of Tuesday Musicale in Pasadena and the Music Teachers Association of California, and has been a soloist with the Christian Science Church since 2002, performing in Garden Grove, Long Beach, and Fullerton, California. She performs in both Spanish and English speaking contemporary Christian churches. She has also been a member of the vocal/instrumental performing group Musica Anima since its inception.

In addition to her distinctions as a performer, Maria Del Pilar has extensive experience as a vocal instructor. In Colombia, she started teaching beginning voice for singers and actors at the Conservatory of Antioquia University. She then became the Vocal Assistant for her vocal instructor Detlef Scholz, teaching beginning and intermediate voice. After she completed her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, the Cali Conservatory and Escuela Popular de Arte of Colombia offered her a full time position teaching voice. There she taught beginning, intermediate and advance students. After moving to Southern California, Ms. Pilar began teaching voice at Music Maker School in Anaheim Hills, expanding her activity to include the Yamaha Music School, Musika Lessons, and her own private music studio. She also provides vocal training and musical direction for the choir at First Thai Presbyterian Church in USA, in Covina, California.
